we considered what it means to shift the center of our analysis away from the idea of a “nuclear family” toward the reality of families. To do so, we examined studies that centered around 7 aspects of families [see the topic for each week on the syllabus] that sociologists have engaged in to show just how diverse families in the United States are.
For this final exam write a 4–5-page, double spaced paper, that responds to the following prompt:
Each week we discussed a variety of themes that ranged from diverse family forms, care work, intersectionality and the political, economic, and social contexts that shapes familial experiences just to name a few. Select 4 themes from the readings that exemplify a shift away from a nuclear family toward different aspects of families. For each theme, please (a) give 2 examples from the readings and describe how each example symbolizes a shift from the center and (b) why it is significant (this is a succinct argument on your part supported by the text). Please do not repeat chapters. You should have a total of 8 examples, 2 for each theme. In other words, you must incorporate 8 different readings from the class.
Based on what we have read and discussed this term, how has your understanding of families either shifted, expanded, or been complimented? Please provide an example and describe why this is important to you.
