Learning Goal: I’m working on a communications discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.Reply on two classmates by 100-130 words each reply: 1. I am using a credible source in my speech. I think this helps with professionalism in my speech. My source uses case studies conducted and confirmed by multiple doctors and qualified personnel. I plan to maintain eye contact with my audience and use appropriate body language while conducting my speech. Specifically, I plan to not move around or play with my hands while I talk. This is really hard for me so it will prove to be a challenge. I plan to not use slang when speaking to my audience. I plan to speak clearly with an appropriate rhythm to not talk too fast so that the audience can understand what I am saying and digest it clearly. If I do stutter or or mispronounce something, I will correct myself and keep my composure so that it does not detract from the message of the speech. Doing so could break the rhythm of the speech and draw attention to myself rather than the message I am trying to convey. I will also try to not use acronyms that are not defined clearly so that I do not confuse my audience. Lastly, I will try to look confident to instill a sense of professionalism to my audience so they belive I am a credible speaker and that I know what I am talking about. 2. I plan on establishing a sense of professionalism in my attire, vocabulary, and terms related to the topic, and with the use of credible sources. I will be wearing formal attire, limiting filler words and excessive physical movement/nervous tendencies. The sources I have selected are from relationship therapists or from life coaches which furthers my credibility on the content of marital communication struggles. I plan on practicing my speech throughout the week in a standing position while recording to catch any mistakes I would like to avoid for the final draft. The vocal delivery is one of the most useful behaviors I have learned to use during formal speeches. The topic may not always be of interest to the listener yet when you are speaking in a passionate way people will be engaged. The use of filler words can be annoying and even distracting to the viewers as they may notice those words more often than the content you are speaking on. Using variety in pitch and pauses also create a more engaging presentation. The up and down of your voice keeps the attention of the listeners, nobody wants to hear a monotone speech for 4-8 minutes straight. The speaker does not seem interested in the topic when speaking in one tone therefore the listener tunes them out and doesn’t care for the presentation. Pauses are also important to avoid speaking too quickly and creating a more dramatic effect on topics of importance.
