Choose TWO of the following questions to answer in two to three substantial paragraphs each with specific examples, making sure you address all parts of the question (25 pts each out of 100; 50% of Final). Questions are listed below 1) Discuss the impact and legacies of Reconstruction on the African American population of the U.S. (and on the U.S. in general) after the Civil War, then discuss all of the ways that White supremacy reasserted itself after the abolition of slavery in the late 19th century (new forms of systemic discrimination) in what became 100 years of “Jim Crow” discrimination. Be sure to include federal government’s responses (or lack thereof), state and local government actions, as well as non-state actors (groups like the KKK…). Discuss the consequences of these new forms of discrimination on the African American population as well some of the ways they addressed, confronted, and sought to dismantle these new forms of discrimination. (Study hints: our text, Takaki’s chapter 5, lectures, films on Reconstruction, articles, podcasts -“Caste”& “Mass incarceration: Slaves of the State” and primary sources). 2) Discuss U.S. westward expansion during the second half of the 19th century (esp. 1870s-early 20th century), U.S. policy towards Native peoples and all of the ways that specific Native peoples were impacted. Be sure to discuss specific US policies (Homestead Act, Dawes Act, Railroads…), including policies towards U.S. Natives (reservations, removal, Assimilation, boarding schools…), and the ways that specific native peoples were impacted. Discuss also some of the ways Natives responded to these policies in their efforts to maintain their communities. (Study hints: our lectures, Takaki ch. 9, film clips “500 Nations: Wounded Knee,” , podcast clip “Ancestry” and “This Land” (on allotment and pulverization of Native lands), readings and primary sources (Chief Joseph) on US & Native peoples in the late 19th century. 3) Describe the complexity of the Civil Rights movements among African American and Latino Americans in the United States from the early 20th century to the late 1960s (and beyond). Be sure to address conditions they faced, strategies, tactics, court cases, protests, student movements and all of the ways African Americans and Latino Americans have pressed (and continue to press) for social and political equality in the United States. (Study hints: films, Takaki chapters 13, 14, 15, films “Making a Way Out of No Way, 1897-1940,” “Rise! The African Americans, 1940-1968,” “Latino Americans, ep. 2, 1880-1942,” and ep. 5 “Prejudice and Pride, 1940s-80s,” primary sources and podcasts). 4) Describe the complexities of Asian American immigration to the United States from the middle of the 19th century to the 20th century (Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese…), tell us about the work they came to do, the communities they formed, then describe the various U.S. responses to these waves of migration (discrimination, violence, Exclusion, incarceration…). Lastly, describe the Asian American movements to achieve social and political equality (court cases, strikes, protests, student movements) from the late 19th century through the twentieth century and some of the challenges they Read, study, and let me know how I can help!
